How to Become A Better Conversationalist

Tuesday July 10th

20:30 – 22:00

Facilitated by Rabbi Shlomo Kory

We spend so much time talking nowadays that we might ask: Why would someone want to attend a seminar in improving conversation skills?! While it is true that we converse more than in previous generations we may be making conversation but not truly communicating. There are several reasons why. First of all, much of our communication is through electronic devices such as telephones, cellular phones, emails, texting, etc. The difference is that you are not fully interacting with the other person. When talking on the phone there is a safety barrier that allows you to terminate the conversation whenever you want. By contrast, terminating a conversation when you are talking face-to face can be much more awkward. Plus, with phone conversations the visual component of communication is not present. It is more impersonal.

Emails and the like give you time to pause and think about your response. Talking face-to face does not have this convenience, making it more risky. Furthermore, both the visual and the auditory components of real communication are missing and you become even more detached from the other person. In addition, we lead fast-paced lives and our communication often tends to be brief and superficial. And, we are distracted because of the multiple responsibilities which force us to multi-task and because of the myriad stimuli that are constantly bombarding us. It has become much more challenging to connect with people. Also, we live in a very artificial world: There are artificial flavors and colors in our foods, artificial sweeteners, artificial grass on our lawns, artificial automated voices when you phone businesses …. even artificial intelligence! We are influenced by what is happening in our environment and our communication may often have an artificial quality to it; it may not come across as sincere.

In summary, communicating meaningfully face-to face with other people has become challenging for us today. And, yet, we cannot do without it because it is essential in connecting with other people and in building authentic relationships.

In this seminar we will explore the art and skills of how to make conversation and how to use it as a springboard to create and develop meaningful relationships with family, friends, neighbors, clients, etc.
